What defines the subgenre?
The danger is material: food, water, shelter, injury, travel, and other survivors all matter. Romance remains central, but love is demonstrated through action—sharing scarce resources, respecting agency, keeping watch, telling the truth, and choosing to remain when leaving would be safer.
How is it different from dystopian romance?
Dystopian romance usually confronts an organized oppressive system. Post-apocalyptic romance begins after systems have fractured or disappeared. A story can be both when survivors encounter new institutions built from the ruins.
Where does The Unburied fit?
The Unburied blends adult survival fiction, zombie horror, slow-burn romance, and found family. Its central question is not whether love cures trauma or addiction. It is whether damaged people can build an honest “we” without erasing one another.
